Got winter blues? Here is a selection of music festivals to look forward to this year. From winter to spring, this list offers you plenty of opportunities to take a break from the hustle and bustle by chilling it out outdoors together with thousands of other music lovers.
Phoenix: Festival of Fire
22-24 June | Swellendam
In celebration of the winter solstice, Vortex is hosting Phoenix. If you’re up for a weekend of bonfires and psytrance beats, be sure to attend Phoenix at the Kam’Bati River Resort outside Swellendam. The line-up includes DJs like Headroom, Deliriant and Gryphon-X.
9-11 August | Northam
This historic festival, hosted on the OppiKoppi Farm outside Northam in Limpopo, is seen by some as the jump start of the South African rock music movement in the late 90s.
Since its birth in 1994, its selection of genres has grown to comprise rock, metal, punk, hip-hop, kwaito, jazz, indie, house and others.
The venue has plenty of trees…

25-26 August | Cape Town
A dance music festival, the Sunflower Outdoor Music Festival is a party in honour of the beginning of spring. The festival is all about “embracing the transcendence of dance, music and lights”.
The live performances range from international to local acts. International artists include Ace Ventura, Felguk, Reality Test and more.

2-7 October | Potchefstroom
Aardklop Arts Festival is perfect for the whole family:
- A kids tent, an amusement park and Afrikaans shows like Lollos and Tjiff & Tjaf
- Top local artists like Francois van Coke, Karen Zoid and Bobby van Jaarsveld
- Popular plays such as Macbeth and Groet die Grotman (Afrikaans version of American classic Defending the Caveman)
Rocking The Daisies
5-7 October | Darling
Rocking The Daisies is one of the hottest music festivals of the year. This year, the lineup includes international artists like GoldLink, Gus Dapperton and Tom Grennan.
Something that makes this festival special is that it gives back to the community: Not only does partner with environmental organisations like Greenpop, but it also hosts charity drives (this year it’s #DaisiesSpringClean).
